FRESH WIND SESSION No. 38

Susan Potter

Recording Date: 4 March 2025

KNCE 93.5 FM Premiere: 23 March 2025

Substack Premiere: 27 March 2025

I first met Susan Potter in the spring of 2023, when David Costanza (Fresh Wind Session No. 8) asked me to open a concert that his band Art of Flying was playing at Salon Sage - a local hair salon that Potter operates. It was one of the first shows that I played after the COVID lockdowns, and it proved to be both memorable and warm, with an attentive audience. Throughout, Potter orchestrated everything with ease - serving everyone in the audience dinner, introducing acts, making sure everything ran on time - and that everyone got paid.

Over the months that followed, I learned that, in addition to her work producing shows in her Salon Sage Presents Series (read an interview I did with her for the local paper about that series at this link), Potter also wrote songs of her own. When I helped get the Taos Song Circle going again this past fall, Potter started coming to every meeting. Me and the other members of the group were struck by her songs - each of which told a story, and had some kind of lesson or message to share. With some coaxing, Potter agreed to perform at the second annual New Year New Songs New Vibe show that I produced on January 2nd of this year with Sarah Hart at Taos Center for the Arts as part of the Sunset Series concerts. Then, earlier this month, she played her first full set as part of Sunset Series No. 27.

As her debut set approached, I asked Potter if she would be interested in recording a Fresh Wind session, and she happily obliged. Listeners to the podcast are in for a treat, as all seven of the songs included in this session are winners. Six of them (“My Kinda Love,” “Starlight,” “The Small Stuff,” “Just A Girl,” “Dawning Of The New Year,” and “The Moment”) were recorded as part of the session, and there is a bonus 7th song with expanded instrumentation (“Sweet Memory of Love”) that Potter recorded elsewhere. As that 7th track is at this time not available anywhere else, for the time being it is a One More Song exclusive!

This Fresh Wind session has turned out to be the penultimate one that I’ll be premiering live on air as part of my radio show on KNCE Taos 93.5 FM. After four years of consistent shows, I’ve recently decided that the time has come to step away from sequencing music for broadcast. Long-time readers of this mailing list (from before the Substack era) will remember that I started sharing sequenced playlists here in the Spring of 2019. It’s been a long journey of exploring music worlds over the past six years, but I’m happy to share that my own music practice has begun to flower again - and I’m excited to be able to allocate that radio/sequencing time to my own projects.

I’ll be continuing the practice of recording Fresh Wind sessions, with two coming every month at least through the end of this year on this platform. If you’ve been enjoying these sessions, please consider becoming a paid subscriber here on Substack! If my number of paid subscribers can continue to expand, that will help a lot toward me continuing this project into 2026 and beyond. Just as a reminder, these sessions are recorded at no cost to the featured artists! Let me know what you think of Susan Potter’s session in the comments!
